Motivation

What do you do when you reach a point during your day when you just want to curl up in bed and sleep. I mean sleep is good, but working towards your goals is also good.

I feel this.

Every so often, I get these tinges of doubt. I think deeply about what I am doing daily and why I am doing it. My long term goal is to work in the film industry, but right now I am learning, writing and reading all I can. Because I am in the infancy of my career, I think it is common to have these feelings of doubt.

I have this new-found-knowledge, but what do I do with it? It is not like I can just go on film sets and start directing. I need to work my way to that. I need to network, meet like-minded people, create my own team that supports one another. But what do I do until then?

Obviously, I will keep going and working towards my goals, but even when I do everything on my to-do list and more, I still feel like I am not doing enough. I work hard, but am I going anywhere? Is it worth it? Will I get burned out before I get where I want to go? Rest is important, but then I feel guilty if I sit down and am not doing anything.

What I think:

These are some of my thoughts. They push me around sometimes, but I shove them back. I end up remembering my goals, looking back at last month and seeing how much forward I have moved. It turns out that at the moment, my achievements may not look like much, but when I look back at them, I realize I have moved a mountain. Then I get temporarily proud of myself.

SOOO… I think that it is common to feel a little setback, feel like you are not moving forward. But despite how I may feel, I make sure to do something each day to bring me closer to my goals. If you do that every day for a year, imagine where you will be. A small step forward each day means you will eventually walk a mile. A small move forward is better than not trying and not moving at all.

Be kind to yourself and your small successes. I need to start doing that and I hope you will too.

Little talk…

Here is some motivation to making your goals a reality, and not just a little note on a piece of paper shoved in the back of your drawer. Motivation. Motivation. You can do this and you will. You will thank yourself in a year because you pushed through this hill and got over it. You got this.

The Music Island film

Starring: Cosmin Zaharia, Natasza Lesniak, Cornel Raileanu and more.

This drama thriller is set to release this summer and has a run time of 1 hour and 40 minutes. The Music Island (2020) is currently in post-production. The movie is written and directed by Cosmin Zaharia.

Movie Talk

I did not get a chance to watch the entirety of this film, but I did get a chance to talk to the director, writer, producer and star of the film, Cosmin Zaharia.

I asked Cosmin to tell me a little more about how he got the idea for this film. He told me that while he was on a vacation in Ibiza in 2017, he was inspired to write this movie. He loved the location, the environment and the feelings he got while he was in Ibiza. So, he started to write a script.

He loved the location so much, that he decided to get a job in Ibiza working as a PR while he worked on writing the script. When he was done writing, he went back to London, only to return to Ibiza in 2018 to start the production of this film. He started the filming process then, but returned to London to finish casting for the final roles.

Once he found the right cast, he started filming the next parts of his movie in Bucharest in February 2019. Later that year, he also filmed in London, during the summer. By September, the whole production of the film was finished and was ready for post-production.

The trailer was released this January and the post-production process of the film will be done this April. After that, the film will be submitted to international film festivals all over the world and will be appearing in cinemas. This film was made without the help of sponsors and was done completely with Cosmin’s own funding.

The Music Island is also Cosmin’s first feature film. That is a major accomplishment and a display of his determination and ambition! You can check out his IMDb page here.

Watch this film:

Although you cannot watch this film yet, you can follow the film’s social media and watch the trailer on Youtube. Later this year and next year, you will be able to see this movie at film festivals. To be notified of screenings near you, you can follow or check out the film’s facebook page, IMDb, the director’s website, or instagram.

Thank you for taking the time to read about new upcoming talent. I always enjoy finding new movies to watch and directors to learn more about, and I hope you do too. Sign up for emails to be notified when I post, so you don’t miss a film review, travel post, or independent filmmaker interview.

Have a great day,

Pete Davidson: Alive from New York

Photo by Robert Bye on Unsplash

Netflix often has comedy specials from established comedians, or new talent that is just getting started. I watch SNL regularly, so I was aware that Pete Davidson had a new special on Netflix. I figured I would watch it eventually, and today I did. This is what I thought of his comedy special, called Pete Davidson: Alive from New York.

What I thought:

I have to be honest, I have been watching SNL for a while so I am pretty familiar with Davidson. At first I saw his comedy as immature, stereotypical and flat, but I the more I learned about him, the more I understood his comedy and its meaning. He seems to have had a hard life, and after learning that, I found a new respect for his comedy.

When I watched his special, I laughed, literally out loud. I was shocked, I giggled and I said, “Noooo.” He tends to tell jokes and stories that are shocking and might make you feel a bit uncomfortable. But, he knows how to handle those situations well and usually acknowledges the audience’s emotions.

He takes the stage well. I have watched some of his other stand-up shows and I can definitely see that he has gained a lot of confidence over the years. It is nice to see him improving and doing something he enjoys.

I think he likes to make jokes about his dad, because in a way it is him keeping his father’s spirit alive. Some of his jokes offend people, but what type comedy does not offend people? I think the purpose of comedy is to get people to laugh by presenting them with obnoxious circumstances, or making them laugh because the extraordinary obscurity of stories. I think Pete does this well. I think he is a good comedian, has good timing and seems to be a nice, complicated dude. Let me know what you think of Davidson in the comments below.

Sentence Summary

Pete is shocking, funny, weird, and knows just what to say to make the audience gasp and guiltily laugh at his “out-there” jokes.

Thanks for reading, maybe leave a joke in the comments? What is a joke that you think Pete would say?

Arianna

P.S.

I just want to leave this here: I was telling my friend how I want to intern/work at SNL and she was like, “You’ll be the next Pete Davidson.” To which I laughed SO LOUD. If you know me, you know I am the complete opposite of Pete, so her saying that shocked me. I have no tattoos, I eat my fruits and vegetables and I am not from Staten Island. It also made me wonder, does she actually think I am that funny? Does she actually think I can be a comedian. Lol, I took it all as a joke. I am a writer, actor and want to direct. But, who knows, maybe comedy is in my future, too? Only time will tell.

Spenser Confidential movie

Photo by Matt Popovich on Unsplash

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Winston Duke, Alan Arkin, Post Malone & more.

The other day I was searching for something light-hearted to watch on Netflix. I have watched some serious films lately and I wanted something that would make me laugh. But on the journey to find a light film, I came across this film which was being advertised by a picture of Wahlberg and Malone. After that, I knew I had to watch it because Malone seems like a genuine, nice guy and I wanted to see if he could act.

Movie Talk

Spenser Confidential (2020) is full of action, violence and carefully placed moments of humor. The story focuses on a group of police officers in Boston, many with the famous Boston accent. Throughout the film, you learn which officers have outside intentions and which have good intentions for the community. There are plot twists, good music and my favorite character, Hawk (Winston Duke) loves oat milk (as do I, so I found that joke quite funny). There are also a few times when I literally laughed out loud while watching this film, but there are also serious moments of gory, strong violence.

Highlights/What to think about:

Spenser (Mark Wahlberg) encounters some unjust situations that he has to decide to get involved in, or to leave them behind. Ultimately, getting involved could result in helping clear someone’s name, but it would also be risking his life. While watching this film, I challenge you think what you would do if you were in Spenser’s situation: save yourself, or risk yourself to restore someone else’s reputation?

Trailer, by Netflix

Watch this film: 7.3/10

Overall, I think this film was solid. I am not a fan of violence and gore, but I understand how that fit into the movie and it’s story. The humor in this film elevated it for me, particularly the character of Hawk and a cute dog named Pearl, yup Pearl. Nice name Wahlberg.

I would rate this film 7/10 because I think it was a good film, that I would recommend to someone who enjoys action films with violence and real-life situations. It is not the typical film I would watch on a Sunday night, but I am glad I watched it. I gave this film an extra .3 because Post Malone has serious acting skills, and I can see him working on another film and having a bigger role. If someone else had his role in the film (Squeeb), I am not sure it would have been as entertaining. I look forward to seeing him act more, he is a talented guy, what can I say?

You can watch this film on Netflix, read about it on IMDb, or watch the trailer on YouTube.

Sentence Summary:

When Spenser gets out of jail, he has the choice to leave his old life behind, or go back and try to make things right.

Thanks for reading. I hope you have a great week!

Imaginative Reality

I want to make films. But when you are just starting out, it can be a learning curve and a process of meeting actors and people in the industry. I am at the start of my career, so I am currently limited to a small crew of: 1 (me). I am the actress, the director, cinematographer, writer, editor, set designer, etc. Sometimes I let that limit me. But other times I want to make a film and I just make it. I have made films before, but I have learned a lot since I filmed my last film. Today, I will be talking about a film I created in a few days. Keep reading to find out more…

How?

Well, I wanted to. So, I made it happen. I wrote a script that took place in one location, had one character and could be filmed on a stationary camera. I wrote it and filmed it in the same day. The following day I edited the film, did some fancy things with the colors, added music, sound effects, the whole ka-bam.

When writing a film about one character in one setting, I think it can be pretty easy to make it boring. I have judged at many film festivals and have found that to be very true. Some directors/writers even have fancy cameras and actors, but their story is still sub-par. Along the way I have learned that it does not matter how expensive your camera is. If there is no story, it still won’t be entertaining. But a nice, shiny camera does help. A lot in some cases.

What is it about?

My film, Imaginative Reality (2020) is about a girl and her relationship with someone named John Doe. The rest is up to the interpretation of the audience. Is John real? Or solely part of her imagination? Or has he passed away? The film comments on what we make ourselves believe and how technology has an influence on this. Is it possible to convince ourselves that something is true even when it is not? How can this effect our lives, everyday emotions? Maybe my film will make you think a little about that. Let me know what you think, please be gentle and constructive. I know my camera may not be the best, the color is off and the acting is eh, but try to focus on the story. 🙂

Here is the film:

Watch it here! I am still a beginner. I have a lot to learn. But with filmmaking, you learn by creating and realizing what worked and what didn’t. (And I know a lot didn’t.) That’s the beauty of creativity. Everyone has to start somewhere, you don’t start out by creating perfect films. But, if you never start, you will never be great. Enjoy, or don’t. Either way, I hope you liked reading more about my filmmaking journey!

Thanks for being here.

What to know before you go to Hawaii

Photo by Luke McKeown on Unsplash

Before I went to Hawaii, I knew there would be beaches, sun and sea turtles. But, I did not know much about the Hawaiian weather, the beautiful Maui mountains or the incredible people that live there. Today, I will let you in on some things I learned while I was in Maui.

1. Rain is normal.

If it starts to rain, do not worry! Soon it will likely stop raining and the sun could be shining bright in 5 minutes. There might even be a rainbow. Depending on the island you go to and the time of year, you may be likely to experience quick rain showers. But then you get to see loads of rainbows!

2. Environment.

People on the islands care about the environment more than most people do. This is a great thing. Help them take care of their home! Do not throw your trash on the ground. You should never do this, but be conscientious. Be kind to the environment, as well as the people.

3. The tropical beauty.

Take time to appreciate the tropical vegetation and landscape of the islands. It is all so special: the mountains, the color of the water, the unique wild life aka chickens and more. Everything is so beautiful, take some time to look at it and enjoy it all.

4. Expensive food.

Food can be expensive, especially things that have to be transported to the island. Eating at a restaurant every day can also add up. If possible, I think going to the grocery store to buy food is a great option. This way, you can make your own food occasionally, save some money and bring the food down to the beach. I am vegan and bought mostly vegetables, and some plant based milks. The prices were not much different than where I live. But if you buy meat and dairy, the prices can be much higher than what you may be used to paying.

5. Go snorkeling, or on a boat.

Go snorkeling, go on a boat, see the island from a new point of view. I highly recommend going on a boat off of the coast so you can see the island from the sea. The island looks different from this perspective and is so unique to see. It almost made me cry because how beautiful it was.

6. Waterproof/Action camera?

If you have a GoPro, bring it! There will be so many different opportunities to use it. You will be so glad you brought the camera, so you could capture so many incredible moments. I bought a GoPro specifically for Hawaii and I am so glad I did. I used it while snorkeling and zip-lining. Now I have irreplaceable pictures that I value so much.

Unsplash

7. Book ahead of time.

Going during busy season, especially June-September, can mean you need to book excursions way ahead of time. If you don’t, you may risk them being fully booked. So, if there is something you want to do for sure, like go in a submarine or zip-lining, I suggest booking it as soon as you can.

8. Save money on flights.

Flights can be expensive, so I recommend looking for sales. Flights to Hawaii do go on sale, they actually pop up often if you make a point to keep checking. The flight can be the most expensive part of the trip, next to the hotel, so I think it is worth the time. You can also sign up for websites that alert you when certain flights go on sale.

9. So many activities to do.

Hawaii has so much to offer. The island you are visiting determines the availability of activities. But there are so many things to do besides swimming in the ocean. You could learn how to surf, take cooking classes, learn how to make a lei, swim in the pool, shop, hike, bike, go on a helicopter, paddle-board, etc. There is SO much to do, so many options. Maybe try something new?

10. Wear reef-safe sunblock!

Have you ever been on vacation and got sunburnt on the first day? Then, every following day you get more and more red? This can really effect your vacation! Wear sunblock! Getting sunburn on the first day of your vacation can really effect the rest of your days and what activities you choose to do.

Thanks for reading.

I hope this information was helpful and gave you a small insight on the beautiful Hawaiian islands. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me in the comments and I will help in anyway I can.

To beautiful sunsets and crashing waves,

Brandon Rhiness, filmmaker

Who is Brandon?

Brandon Rhiness is a writer, director and a producer. He has been making films since he was a teenager. But in 2015, he started taking this hobby a bit more seriously. He is from Edmonton, Canada and also writes graphic novels. His lengthy credits include writer, director, editor, actor, cinematographer, and 2nd A.D. To find out more about his work, you can visit his IMDb.

His films:

I have had the opportunity to watch a few of Brandon’s films. His writing and directing style is unique and unlike most independent films I have watched. The stories he tells tend to be dark, but rooted with meaning. A brilliant mix of horror, drama and comedy.

The color-grading in his films is one thing that caught my attention. The use of different hues of colors adds to the tone of his movies and evokes emotion from the audience. I enjoyed watching his directing style because I found that he told the character’s stories well.

A few of Brandon’s films…

Brandon has worked on film and TV in various genres and mediums. He has also worked on web series. Here is some of his work:

Check out Brandon’s work:

You can find Brandon on his facebook, his company’s facebook and more of his films on YouTube. He also has a new feature film called Hot Box that comes out very soon on Amazon Prime. But, for now you can check out the trailer on his YouTube channel. The full film should be available within the coming weeks.

John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch

Unsplash, I edited picture

So I just finished watching this special on Netflix and it was pretty weird. But I expected nothing less from Mulaney. I can relate to John because we both have very obscure senses of humor. Some of the songs and bits in the show I found funny, but others I did not. Maybe this is because I am not a fan of musicals and much of this special was singing.

Jake Gyllenhaal made an appearance and he did a great job. He was very funny and added a lot to the show. I also admire the creativity and the up-beat nature of the show as a whole. I have been wanting to watch his special for some time now, but today specifically I was looking for something to cheer me up. So I decided to watch John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch. And soon, I was cheered up.

The show is weird and unique. Not everyone will find it funny, but that is ok. That is the nature of the business. But, if you are feeling upset and need something to make you giggle, or smile, or something to say, “That is just so freaking weird” to, than maybe this show is perfect for you.

One thing that I liked about this special was the ending. Here, I heard these important words: “There has never been anyone like you. There is no one like you. There will never be anyone like you. Therefore, be yourself.” That is some powerful stuff right there. It is always nice to hear that and be reminded, even if it sounds childish.

If you get a chance, watch this special on Netflix or see the trailer on YouTube. It might make you laugh, or you may think Mulaney is a bit too eccentric for your taste. Either way, it might put you in a good mood, so it’s worth a watch.

Arianna xx

P.S. In the words of Stefon, this Netflix special has everything: men in mustaches, children singing weird songs and an asian american woman named John Mulaney.
